This is an off-shoot of our 7Songs lists as started on Twitter at @7SongsCup. The intention of this is to generate best rock album collections for each year. A Series consists of 7 year-lists and within each series, the years selected will be spaced 7 years apart.

Punters (that is you people) are to send in up to 7 of your favourite albums for that year. (See Disclaimer below before submitting). I will list albums in a linked forum and at the end of the Series (7 different years) we will build our 'Ultimate Collection'.

@7Songs started as @AltMusicBrownlow. It was set up as an alternative to @MusicBrownlow where the 'big bands', stars and pop artists are being covered. 7Songs is more focused on rock-based bands, mostly of the heavier and/or alternative variety. That continues here with 7Albums. Though I will be stricter on the choice of bands for 7Songs Seasons, try to stick to our niche here too. (I am not deploring other styles, it is just that they have their places and time in the lime-light.) When submitting your lists, think LOUD, not mellow)… and…
*First priority is that they are guitar-based!
*Ask yourself - would they play Soundwave (or similar festivals), appear in mags/websites such as Wall of Sound (Aus), Blunt, Hot Metal, Kerrang, Loudwireetc? JJJ is no guide anymore (though Faster, Louder might be, if it is still on). Just b/c something is on JJJ does not mean it is 'alternative' enough for here.
*Most bands will be punk, alternative, indie (as in what was called 'Independent Music in 90s & earlier), metal, hard rock, rock, ska, industrial and all of their related genres. The odd upbeat folky band might make it too (not slow country-indie-singer-songwriter-basically pop stuff; we want Celtic-folk-punk stuff).
*Avoid straight pop artists, country, blues, hip hop, rap, dance, electronica, soul, jazz, classical, R&B, indie-pop, ambient, all slow, 'indie' that remains really lo-fi and continually goes, "Dnn, Dnn, Dnn, Dnn." etc.
*Albums should be original music by the artist. Typically studio LPs (though EPs fine too). No compilations (unless it is new and rare material); no best ofs; no live albums (unless it is actually a new album of new material recorded live); no mixed artists inc soundtracks, various artists, tribute albums, etc; no cover albums, no singles, no re-releases/remastered/redux etc. I hope that covers it. ;)
These are all just priorities. There may be exceptions, and of course there WILL be arguments regarding genre and whether or not a band is alternative or heavy enough… I know ;). We can play out the exceptions on the Twitter, (like we did with Beastie Boys and The Prodigy - both accepted BTW ;)). Happy punting and I hope you get into the spirit of creating lists with us :)

  • Each round is a separate YEAR. The years are pre-selected for a series.
  • People are to list UP TO 7 of their favourite albums for that year.
  • Each mention counts as 1 vote; there is no order for yearly collections.
  • Rounds typically last around 48 hours. This gives people a chance to 'check out' albums and actually find some from that year. (One of main purposes of doing this is for me, and hopefully others, to explore new music :))

Round Winner

  • At end of each round a leader board will be posted showing all albums that received MORE than 1 vote. (1 voters will be in a separate table on forums, but will play no further part).

  • Each series will consist of 7 rounds of 7 different years, each separated by 7 years. ;)
  • After 7 rounds, there will be mention of a Biggest Collection Award. This is the year that had the most albums of more than 1 vote in their list. (This award takes no notice of individual votes for each album; just how many albums made the list). Then an Ultimate Album Collection Field will be put together.

Ultimate Album Collection Field

Note: This operates similar to the 7Songs format, but will be ran as a collection rather than a 'race' There will also be more to choose from in the final.

  • At end of Series a field of 24 Albums will be selected to make up the Ultimate Collection field.
  • The field will be made up of:
  1. All the top 2 albums from each round. If there is a tie, the album listed 1st will get through (as it reached the lead 1st). Total albums: 14.
  2. 3 Biggest Collection entries: The top 3 years on our Biggest Collection Award will automatically have their 3rd albums qualify. Total albums: 17.
  3. Wild Card Entry: 2 random contributors from Twitter throughout the Series will get to choose an album from ANY THAT POLLED MORE THAN 1 VOTE throughout the series. I will announce this at the end of the rounds. If I/we don't hear back from that person with 24 hours, I will try another. If again I don't hear back, this wild card entry will be dropped. Move to next stage. Total albums: 19.
  4. The rest of the field (5 albums) will be chosen from the next highest ranking albums from across all rounds. If a tie - 1st choice to year with the biggest collection, then next biggest and so on. (This shares the selection around - not all from Biggest Collection if on = votes). If still a tie I will determine randomly from the contenders. (I own lots of dice). Total songs: 24. (10 more than songs Cups).

Ultimate Album Collection Punting

  • Once the field of 24 is finalised, voters then have to pick their First 4 (just like in punting).
  • Your First 4 IS IN ORDER.
  • These will be used as points to determine our ultimate album. Points are basically reverse order. So 1st pick = 4 points; 2nd = 3; 3rd = 2; 4th =1.
  • Winner is the album with most points.

Series 1 Ultimate Collection order

Band & Album Why it is here. Run (Votes)
Guns 'N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction Won 1987. Pretty much led from start to finish. Tired a little, but still flogged most of field. (32)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon R-Up 1973. Started well, fell to midfield and then stormed home to almost catch Appetite. Beat 3 more fancied runners. (27)
ACDC - Back In Black Won 1980. The favourite ran a very cool race. Was not going to win and was in and out of placings a few times. Got job done in the end. (22)
Pearl Jam - Vitalogy R-Up 1994. Started slow, sat 2nd for a lot of middle of race, overtaken by fast finishing DSotM and steady BiB. (17)
Led Zeppelin - House of the Holy Won 1973. 2nd '73 runner in top 5. Another that started well and finished well. (16)
Soundgarden - Superunknown Won 1994. Yet another that started strong, dropped right back and then recovered at end. Slightly down from starting posi. (15)
Iggy & the Stooges - Raw Power In for high votes 1973. And another. Faded through middle part of race, but gained a couple of posi's late. Only 3 lengths of 4th, making 3 '73 runners in top 7. (14)
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Let Love In In for high votes 1994. This one surged early too. Was in the placings mid race. Still a good finish along with rest of strong '94 stable. (13)
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral In for high votes 1994. Never really in it, but a solid finish. Beat several more fancied runners. (9)
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells R-Up 2001. Fair finish midfield. Lingered near the rear, but finished strong. (9)
Green Day - Dookie 1994 Biggest Collection bonus. A late run saved it from very embarrassing performance - still beaten by 4 stable mates (when it was 3rd of the stable). (8)
System of a Down - Toxicity 2001 2nd Biggest Collection bonus. Ran well. Never going to win, but may have beat expectations, being the 3rd '01 runner. (7)
Def Leppard - Hysteria R-Up 1987. Another that jumped out full of energy but could not keep up with strong field. (7)
Therapy? - Troublegum Wild Card chosen by punter. Never really had a chance, but surged towards end to pass more fancied rivals. Solid run for WC, but outclassed. (6)
The Strokes - Is This It? Won 2001. Very disappointing run. Even beaten by both stable mates in the race. (5)
Iron Maiden - ST R-Up 1980. Battled early, but never in it. (4)
The Offspring - Smash In for high votes 1994. Certainly did not smash this race. At rear of field all run. (3)
Clutch - Psychic Warfare Won 2015. The 2015 stable was completely out of its depth in this race. This was their best runner and never in it. This stable might need time to mature. (3)
Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies In for high votes 1973. Probably suffered from the '73 field having several runners, as punters tried to share votes around. (2)
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath In for high votes 1973. Another to suffer from having sev '73 runners. Not the bands strongest, and we are certain they will have more runners in future cups. (1)
Metallica - Death Magnetic Won 2008. Not sure the 2008 truck with runners even showed. (0)
Faith No More - Sol Invictus R-Up 2015. Surprising result. Scratched at the barriers. Surely we will see some siblings of this one in the future. (0)
Rise Against - Appeal To Reason R-Up 2008. Did not show. No punk punters showing support for recent music continues. (0)
Slipknot - Iowa 2001 Wild Card chosen by punter. The dummy horse thrown to the wolves. Knew it wouldn't perform and sat on its haunches at the start. Stewards looking into this one. (0)

Series 1 Ultimate Collection Order

Band & Album Why it is here. Run (Votes)
Metallica - Master of Puppets 1986 Winner 1st. Got a good start, fell back in pack for a while before blitzing it near the end. Top spot by 9 votes! Up 3 spots. (42)
Pearl Jam - Vs 1993 R-Up 2nd. Started well and remained in the Top5 throughout. Just held off the following three to claim our 2nd top LP. Held pre-race posi. (33)
ACDC - Highway to Hell 1979 R-Up 3rd. Another to be around the placings for a lot of the run. Up 5 spots. ACDC now claimed 3rd spot in both series. (32)
The Clash - London Calling 1979 Winner 4th. Just missed the placings. Started strongly, faded and then then shuffled back towards top about 3/4 of way through. Up 1 spot. (30)
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command 3rd Biggest Collection bonus entry (2000) 5th.Highest ranking for a 2000+ LP in both series. Even took the lead for a while. Up 13 spots! And only here b/c 2000 rated so many different albums. Smashed the other albums from that year. Was a fav then, but did not win. (30)
Slayer - Reign in Blood 1986 R-Up 6th. Metal started strongly again, then was shuffled back to mid stack, but rose from the dead to claim 6th. Up 1 spot, so about where expected. (25)
Nirvana - In Utero 1st of high votes extra entries (1993) 7th. Although it finished down 3 spots, this LP polled on a lot of punters' votes: just the lower end votes. Enough to keep in a top third finish. (24)
The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream 1993 Winner 8th. 1993 started with the Top3 favs, so it was always going to be difficult to squeeze them all in. Funnily enough, it was the fav that missed out on a lot of early votes. Beaten by 2 other 93 LPs, though still has a worthy spot on our top 1/2 for this series. (23)
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time Wild Card (1986) 9th. Another metal LP to follow the trend. Strong start, petered off, then shuffled back up stack late. A great choice as WC, as it rose 10 spots to claim a spot in the top 1/2 of our S2 Ultimate Collection. (16)
Queen of the Stone Age - Rated R 2000 Winner 10th. Did not look good for this LP until the punters laid down the votes late in the piece. Shuffled past 5 others very late for atop half finish. Up 6 spots. (15)
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars 1972 R-Up 11th. Wow, did this surprise? Flew up the charts early, got as high as 2nd, but slowly slipped back in the stack. A pretty disappointing finish considering how high it got, but only down 1 spot from pre-race start. (14)
Tool - Undertow 3rd of high votes extra entries (1993) 12th. Unlike others, metal-heads could not find room for this LP in early votes. It slowly climbed the stack to finish at the half way point, exactly where it started. (10)
P.J Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea 2000 R-Up 13th. Only a vote out of the top half. Started very well, but struggled to get out of middle order. Still, up 4 spots is pretty good. (9)
You Am I - Sound As Ever 4th of high votes extra entries (1993) 14th. Another of the 93 crop. Too many in the end. Very slow start and was always in bottom half. Another to finish where they started in favourtism. (8)
Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace 2007 Winner 15th. Not a great day for 2007. This is the best they could muster, & it was lucky some later punters popped it on the collection. Down 2 spots. (8)
Mastodon - Once More 'Round the Sun 2014 Winner 16th. In a continuing trend for recent albums (they haven't had time to become classics of course), this got ignored early. But some late-comers shuffled it up the order to finish 6 spots above its pre-race ranking. (7)
Van Halen - 5150 5th of high votes extra entries (1986) 17th. Was misnamed in the initial field. I hope that did not have a bearing on its posi. There were several 86 runners, so this missed out and fell 2 spots, but still smashed Slippery When Wet from that year (7)
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill 2nd of high votes extra entries (1986) 18th. Another 86 LP to miss the cut. Actually fell 7 spots. A bit of fun, but not great enough to poll many votes in the Ultimate Collection. (5)
Deep Purple - Machine Head 1972 Winner 19th. Hmmm. What to say. 72 = not a lot of competition, yet that year's 2nd runner smashed it here? Down a massive 13 spots! (5)
Grinderman - Grinderman 2007 R-Up 20th. Always looked out of its depth here. Still polled some votes to make the S2 collection and hold its posi. (3)
Melvins - Houdini Wild Card (1993) 21st. Luckly some late comers had a look and placed it in collection. Almost missed out. Still, up 3 spots and making 6 LPs from 93 represented in the final collection. (3)
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet Biggest Collection bonus entry (1986) NA. Did not make collection. very surprising, given how huge this was in its day. Probably the 1st of our type of music that actually sold many millions, but did not make our collection.
Bloc Party - A Week in the City 2nd Biggest Collection entry (2007) NA. Did not make collection. Did not really think this would make it or rate high. Was not a lot of interest in the Year collection.
Jack White - Lazaretto 2014 R-Up NA. Did not make collection. There has been a bit of love for this guy at 7Songs, but such a recent (& fairly obscure) LP had little chance here.
