The Devil has the Best Tunes 1968 Mix Tape - CCs
LOVED
Sympath for the Devil.
Summertime Blues. This sound had to have inspired the likes of MC5.
Race with the Devil. A great discovery for me. Not sure on some vocals, but cool song.
Born to be Wild. Who doesn't love this? Cool rock song.
LIKED
Voodoo Child.
White Room. Mainly for the guitars.
Beck's Bolero. This was going in OK below, but when it kicks in about halfway it gets more interesting.
OK
Song of a Baker. Clearly, I'm not as big on Small Faces as many other punters.
Days. I was rapt to see a Kinks song on here, but this just did not hit me.
Dime-A-Dance Romance. Some good sounds (esp' in 2nd half) but just not strong enough overall.
NOT FOR ME
One Sure Thing.
ORDER
Going for the slow build-up with Sympathy… first. Not bad, but a tad long for an opener.
First few are quite slow actually. Dime a Dance picks up the pace a little.
Side A peaks at the end.
I'd have opened Side B with the 2nd song on it. Builds nicely into Born to Be Wild.
Feels a drawn-out ending with last two songs together. I'd have separated those two,
though Voodoo Child is a cool way to close.
Whilst the 1st not my thing: good use of bonus tracks.
DISCOVERIES
I good cover of Summertime Blues. Cited as early influences of heavy metal,
it seems I might need to check out more Blue Cheer.
Race with the Devil. What a cool rumbling track. Those guitars! Shit hot inclusion.
(My favourite new track at this point).
OVERALL
A mixed bag for me. Sequencing seemed odd to me too.
Still, some cool songs here and I got two new very good songs to add to my H100.
