Well, I haven't had a lot to say on your year in review posts (obviously), but this one…
Not being a Gunners fan at all, I immediately thought there were some different artists that deserved a look.
My list would go along these lines:
1. Pearl Jam - Ten
I think this one speaks for itself.
2. R.E.M. - Out of Time
Is very possibly still their best cd, and usually the first one I go to when looking for an REM song for a mixed playlist.
3. Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid
Listened to this almost constantly in '91.
4. Nirvana - Nevermind
Appreciate them a lot more now than I did back then. Didn't pick them up as well as I did Pearl Jam, hence the lower placement.
5. Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
Still love going back to listen to these songs. A bit 'pop'ier than I'd be listening to nowadays, but he had some great riffs (or at least I remember thinking so at the time).
6. Enya - Shepherd Moons
In what would later be the voice to back the Lords of the Rings movies, as well as parts of the Last of the Mohicans movie (with Daniel Day Lewis), I did (and still do) find Enya compelling. Certainly NOT something that I would listen to to get psyched up, but to get into more of a serene state it works wonders.
7. Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
Siva and Rhinoceros are still two of my favorite SP tracks, and when you look at the quality of the songs that were cut from this, you realise just how good a cd it really is.
For me, I'm leaving out a few other notable cds, including Metallica, Badmotorfinger, Mental Jewelry by Live, Mama Said by Lenny Kravitz and, of all things a soundtrack, The Commitments, Vol 1 (wasn't sure about including this one, but with songs written by the likes of Aretha, Otis, Wilson Pickett, and Clarence Carter, the music is simply extraordinary).
