Gigs DEF

Dan Sultan

AAMI Park, Sun 16th Feb, 2014

I knew nothing of this guy and he was a good arvo opener. A little more than a quite singer-songwriter sound. Bluesy? His voice sounded a bit like the singer from Gaslight Anthem at times. I will have to check out some of his stuff. (Oh, and his uncle, Vernon, lives in Wyche at the moment :)).

  • Played with: Bruce Springsteen & E-Street Band
  • Went with: Mum, Tracy, Glen, Brenda.

Dave Graney

Rock Above the Falls Lorne, NYE 1995 & Big Day Out RMS January 1995

He seemed to appear everywhere at the time. Didn’t do anything for me - liked his bright suits though.

Diesel Boy

The Palace - Hits & Pits, Good Friday, 2013

This was an acoustic set by Diesel Dave in a small room. He played all the songs I wanted to hear (inc Cock Rock, Punk Rock 101, Titty Twister, Sleepy Sililoquy and She's My Queen). Great crowd participation. I quite enjoyed having the acoustic sets in another bar. (Went with Aido, Blair & Shane).

Bridge Mall Inn, Ballarat, Friday 3rd March ??

We were quite surprised to see 2 U.S punk bands we had heard off punk sampler CDs (Epitaph, Fat) in our local. It was a great night. These guys were so good I bought all their CDs at the merch' stand to take home. :)

  • Played with: Bouncing Souls
  • Went with: Shane

Duff McKagan's Loaded

Soundwave - Flemington Racecourse, March 1st 2013

I had read Duff's autobiography last year and really wanted to see Duff. I was going to head over to Blink 182 if the set waned at all, but as it went it just kept building. On the small Stage 5, it was an intimate set and to get the crowd going Duff crowd surfed whilst playing. Loaded's songs sounded a lot heavier live and when Duff swapped to bass mid-song, the crowd went off. This went into a version of G'N'R's Fuckin' Crazy, sung by a stoked Danko Jones and then Duff's version of It's So Easy. Duff seemed rapt with the audience's appreciation and in all I was so glad I checked this out. Surprise of the day.

Sounded tight. (Went and bought their album and did not like it).

  • Went with: Aido, Slug
  • Souvenirs: Ticket ($59)

Escape the Fate

Adelaide Soundwave, 22nd Feb, 2015

All of us (Blair, Mark, Shane) gathered on the grass to have tea near the 'punk stage' whilst these guys were playing. Heard about the first half of their set, none of which did much for any of us, before heading off to see some Judas Priest.

Faith No More

Soundwave Adelaide, 21st Feb, 2015

Another 90's band I was so glad to finally see. (I had just seen Soundgarden and The Smashing Pumpkins were the next night). They got off to a good start with new single, Motherf'er (which some don't like, but I do). From there it was up and down. There were some pretty boring songs and some fantastic songs. Richochet was an early fav, and I don't think I would have forgiven them if they did not play Midlife Crisis (probably the most anticipated song of the festival). No Falling to Pieces, Diggin' the Grave or From Out of Nowhere, but it was good to hear We Care A Lot live. It came across well - though the other songs at the end did not. I could have left just a little earlier and heard more New Found Glory. A show awesome ups and a few downs, but overall 4 star performance. (Shane)

The Fall of Troy

Soundwave RMS, Fri 29th Feb, 2008

Another band I wanted to watch, but can’t remember if I did see them. (Wish I had written this after the show).

The Fat Thing

Ballarat Trades Hall, Dec 7th, 2019

The%20Fat%20Thing%20Dec2019.jpg Fat%20Thing%20Dec2019.jpg
Holy shit, it was so fun to see these guys live again. I'll say it again: despite all the bands I have seen, I still rate these as one of the most fun to see live. They have a sound that is heavy enough for me, but they also have this sound that gets people on their feet. It is impossible to stand still at their gigs. I enjoyed this so much, including the cake fight! Opened with Country Joe and then Slayer. It was a surprise to hear them bust this out so early. We also got a brand new song; first one in about 20 years - Leonard Cohen, Your Lawn Needs Mowin'. We got another version of Touch Me, I'm Sick too \m/. I hope they continue to do this each year.
  • Played with: The Push. (An okay, but generic, reggae band).
  • Went with: Shane, Blair & Amanda.

The Tote, Collingwood, ???

A reunion gig organised by Hainsy. It was so great to see these guys again.

  • Played with: The Suns.
  • Went with: Slug, Aido?, Shane

The Provincial, Ballarat

Towards the end of their run, they returned to Ballarat for this gig. Featured 2 new members from memory. Wore scary masks. I got to sing the intro to Slayer (even though I didn't really know the words at the time) and they covered Touch Me I'm Sick! :)

Bridge Mall Inn ("The Rat") Ballarat, Too many times to recall

We tried to attend every time TFT played, which wasn’t that hard, as we usually went to the Rat in 90’s. Unfortunately, I missed their very early gigs where they covered Mudhoney’sTouch Me I’m Sick. Remain one of my favourite live bands to this day, despite all the gigs I have been to.

The Fauves

The Fireballs

Rock Above the Falls Lorne, NYE 1995

Crazy. (I remember when we 1st heard The Living End we thought they were The Fireballs with a different name).

Big Day Out RMS, January 1995

Early in day on main stage. These guys seemed to be everywhere at the time.

musicline14.gif

The Flatliners

The Palace - Hits & Pits, Good Friday, 2013

I was looking forward to these guys. I didn't really know their stuff, but had heard good things. Unfortunately, they just didn't do for any of us. Eulogy was the only standout song. (Went with Aido, Blair & Shane).

musicline14.gif

Flogging Molly

Soundwave - Flemington Racecourse, March 1st 2013

Not as good as last time I saw them. A mid set Tobacco Island and Seven Deadly Sins at the end were my 2 favs, but they did not play others I was hoping to hear. (Kinda wished I had checked out Kyuss during this time).

Festival Hall Melb, Sat 13th May, 2006

We all liked FM the best on the night.

  • Played with: Emery & Story of the Year
  • Went with: Aido, Slug
  • Souvenirs: Ticket ($59)

From Autumn to Ashes

Soundwave RMS, Fri 29th Feb, 2008

Metal shed. Heard good reviews ~ FATA, so went to metal shed early in day. I liked their sound and they had guys roundhouse kicking everywhere.

musicline14.gif

Front End Loader

(Saw these guys several - below are some I can reference).

Big Day Out RMS, January 1995

Watched these in the Great Hall (what I called the Pavilion elsewhere) whilst most watched Primal Scream on main stage. Fun stuff.

musicline14.gif

Fucked Up

Soundwave - Flemington Racecourse, March 1st 2013

I hung around to see some of these guys on Stage 5 before heading to Metallica. Not bad - singer reminded me a lot of the one from Totally Unicorn, by getting in the pit, stripping off and going crazy. (I am sure it was these guys I saw a little at the end of 2011's Soundwave too).

musicline14.gif

Fur

(I believe I saw Fur several times at small festivals/gigs - below are some I can reference).

Big Day Out RMS, January 1995

Unfortunately I can’t remember much about this band now, except for the massive blonde hair on the singer.
